Howard is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of Baltimore.

He is a leading authority on the life and music of Connie Converse, and frequently gives presentations about her legacy in conjunction with his book To Anyone Who Ever Asks: The Life, Music, and Mystery of Connie Converse (Dutton/Penguin Random House). To date, he has lectured at Williams College, Johns Hopkins University, The Bob Dylan Center, University of Texas at Austin, The Peabody Essex Museum, Brandeis University, and dozens of others.

Howard has also delivered talks on other topics covered in his culture writing including: Eugene O’Neill, Susan Glaspell, Bob Dylan, David Lynch, The Shaggs, Cordell Jackson, and Greil Marcus’s “The Old, Weird America.”

Howard also conducts master classes and workshops that draw from his three decades as a professional songwriter, bandleader and performing artist Topics include: Songwriting and Improvisation, Interpreting the American Songbook, and Building a Career as an Independent Musician
