October 2000 is shaping up to be one of the biggest months yet for HFQ! In addition to its ongoing weekly residencies at Pete's Candy Store and Sardi's, the band will be presenting a new show at the prestigious and hip JOE'S PUB The Public Theater with a three-Sunday run (see schedule page for info on tickets). The new gig is the most significant engagement for the group since its Algonquin debut in 1999, as it will formally introduce HFQ's new direction for the first time in a major venue. For those of you who have seen the band recently at Pete's Candy Store (or have heard about the shows there), you know what to expect: a repertoire of almost entirely original music, two new band members, and a style that is at once intimate and explosive. HFQ will be playing material from its new album "I LIKE YOU A LOT," due for release at the end of the month. For fans of the band who aren't able to make the late nights in Williamsburg and at Sardi's, the early start time (8:30pm), intimate seating and one of the best sound systems in New York make JOE'S PUB is the ideal place to hear The Howard Fishman Quartet!

The Old Order Changeth
The Howard Fishman Quartet is pleased to announce the permanent addition of two new members -- Erik Jekabson on trumpet and John Flaugher on bass! As the band prepares for its exciting fall season (highlighted by the October residency at Joe's Pub, resumption of our Sardi's tenure, ongoing shows at Pete's Candy Store, and the long-awaited follow-up to our first CD) the addition of the two new members finds the quartet in a state of unprecedented focus and regularity. The band has evolved once again, and with a brand new repertoire of original material, has built on their intense immersion in American roots music to create what Mike Zwerin, writing in Paris for The International Herald-Tribune, has appropriately dubbed 'Post-Eclectic Pop'... past eclecticism and into the frontier of a new musical landscape. What is it about The Howard Fishman Quartet that makes their performances so compelling? The answer lies, partially in Howard Fishman's own words: "The music is a union of opposing forces, old and new, raw and polished, naive and experienced, traditional and iconoclastic, structural and chaotic." Come on down and hear it for yourself!
Highlights for the Month to Come
Those of you who have been to our Williamsburg shows recently (PETE'S CANDY STORE, EUROPA, TEDDY'S) have seen some wild shows, as the group continues to develop its growing repertoire of original "Post-Eclectic Pop" (-Mike Zwerin, INTL.HERALD-TRIBUNE). HFQ will feature this show on the Downtown circuit this month with shows at MERCURY LOUNGE, THE COOLER and CB's GALLERY. -- Howard Fishman Trio (with Russell Farhang, violin and Jim Whitney, bass) makes its debut at the prestigious jazz club KNICKERBOCKER BAR and GRILL for a four-night residency beginning August 16th. These shows will feature the jazz side of the group, with extended instrumental features and a decidedly urbane selection of material. -- Community Day: On Sunday, August 20, HFQ plays "Community Day" at the very-happening P.S.1 in what promises to be a huge event (some 1500 people are expected!). -- Forgotten Gems: For those who yearn for the days of intimate renderings of material from the band's repertoire of standards and forgotten gems, HFQ will perform a programs of this material at concert at THE JEWISH MUSEUM on August 8. -- Yabby: Our twice-monthly brunch dates at YABBY are occasions to hear the band try out new instrumentalists and material in a casual, relaxed environment.
Excitement in Aug and Beyond
August has shaped up to be a month of diversity for The Howard Fishman Quartet!. HFQ will reopen its SARDI'S show on Friday, September 15, where we will be weekly through 2001. And we can now officially announce that we will begin a residency at the buzz-heavy JOE'S PUB beginning on Sunday, October 8!
